Another way of driving traffic to your blog is by exchanging Technorati favorites.  For those of you who are new to blogging, Technorati is a search engine for blogs which attracts a large number of web surfers/bloggers looking to read other people’s blogs.  Technorati has a page for the Top 100 Most Favorited which is a list of blogs that have received the most number of votes from other people using  their Technorati account to vote for their favourite blog.  Getting into the Technorati Top 100 Most Favorited can give greater exposure to your blog and therefore develop a wider reader base.  Currently the No. 1 most favorited has 2432 members and No. 100 has 255 members so I am going to start a Technorati Favourites Exchange to try to get into the top 100 and try to increase traffic to this blog.

If you would like to participate in this Technorati Favourites exchange and increase traffic to your own blog, these are the steps:

1. Favourite my blog by clicking here
2. Leave a comment on this post with your blog address (1 address only please) and I will then favorite your blog as well.  I will try to do this a.s.a.p (my Technorati nickname is stephyl so you can check)
3. Copy this post from where it says “Copy From Here” until “End Copy” (make sure you change the link in step 1 to your own Technorati Favorites Link which can be obtained from this Technorati page and also change the Technorati nickname to your own in step 2) and add a link to your blog to the list below.
4. Once you have created your post and I receive a pingback, I will add a link to your blog to this list so that visitors to my blog can see that you are also having a Technorati Favourites Exchange.

A great way to generate backlinks to your blog is by submitting online articles.  Ezines Articles is a popular article submission website which serves millions of unique visitors monthly and allows you to add a link to your blog/website underneath your article which therefore gives it increased exposure and credibility.  If you write an article that is related to your blog’s main subject area and submit it, if your article is good then publishers looking for new material for their ezines, newsletters, etc. will publish it on their websites and will give you a link back to your website in exchange.  Helpful, well-written articles are snapped up daily by thousands of publishers from around the world in virtually all industries so you could potentially generate a lot of links from a single article which should help your search engine optimization.  Also readers of your article will see you as a credible source since you have been published and if they like what you have written, then chances are they will click on the link to your blog so this will also increase traffic to it!

A blog will survive and grow if it has regular readers as well as if it constantly attracts new people.  Business cards are a great way to promote your blog and increase traffic to it and possibly even revenue!  They are easy to carry around with you as you never know when an opportunity to market your blog may strike.  They are also something tangible to remind people of your blog and how to get there. 

Vista Print are giving 250 free full-colour business cards on their website for most countries around the world so it is not just restricted to UK residents (just select your country from the toolbar at the top of the website).  The service allows you to design, proof and order your business cards online and there are many different background designs that are available for you to choose from so that you can make your blog stand out.  Vista Print are also offering a free rubber stamp or sticky notes if you already have business cards or would prefer to have a stamp/sticky notepad instead.

I’m picking out my design for my Londonerlife business card, here’s what I’ve come up with so far.  What do you think?  Not sure about the CEO bit, haha

Last week I wrote about using the do follow plugin and how it can be used to give backlinks to your readers who comment on your posts.  There are some pros and cons of using this plugin that you may want to consider when deciding if you want to use it or not.

Pros:

• It will encourage people to comment and therefore increase traffic to your site
• You will be giving something back to your commentors

Cons:

• You may get an increase in spam comments
•  It may affect your search engine optimization strategy (if you have one) as you may be linking to other websites that are unrelated to your blog 

So given these pros and cons, it is up to you to decide whether you wish to use the do follow plugin and whether the pros outweigh the cons or vice versa.  In my opinion, if your blog is fairly new and not yet attracting a lot of visitors, then you should use the do follow plugin as it will help to increase your traffic especially if you join the D-List.  Also if you approve comments before they go live on your blog, then you can fish out the spam ones in the process or use the Akismet plugin to help get rid of spam.  However if you don’t have a lot of time to approve all your comments then spammers could get to be a real pain in the **** although you will probably still get spam and unrelated comments whether you use the do-follow plugin or not as some people are unaware that Wordpress automatically puts a no follow tag on comments.  If your blog is already fairly established and you are getting a lot of visitors then you may not want to bother with the do-follow plugin and save the hassle of spam and the possibility of affecting your search engine ranking.
