Green Tea Frozen Yoghurt

Posted on August 26th, 2007 in Green Tea London by Stephanie

Came across another green tea flavoured food yesterday whilst walking around central London - green tea frozen yoghurt from Itsu!  Itsu started off as a Japanese travelator type restaurant in Soho serving westernised Japanese food but now have several branches around London which sells just healthy takeaway boxes of sushi, sashimi, noodles and other Japanese delights as well has healthy juices and soups.  In their branch on Haymarket near Piccadilly they also have on the menu low fat 65 calorie frozen yoghurts in plain and green tea flavour (this is the only branch I have come across so far that has this).  The green tea frozen yoghurt has a very mild green tea flavour and comes out freshly whipped from a machine.  I personally prefer green tea ice cream as I am not so keen on yoghurt and it doesn’t have a strong enough green tea flavour to drown out the sour yoghurt taste but if you want to go for the low calorie option, then you should definately try this!

Yakitoria

Posted on August 2nd, 2007 in Green Tea London, Mission - Japanese Restaurants by Stephanie

Went to Yakitoria for my Japanese Restaurant Mission last Saturday with a booking through Toptable to get their 50% off the bill offer.  The restaurant is located in Paddington just near the station overlooking Paddington Basin.  The interior of the restaurant is very modern and the tables are nicely laid out for big groups as well as couples. Unfortunately the food did not meet the same standards, it was probably the worst Japanese food I have ever had.  My friend and I ordered some yakitori to share which included pork, duck, beef, lamb and bacon and also 3 different types of sushi rolls - california roll (crabstick, cucumber, avocado, tobiko), alaskan roll (salmon, prawn, tobiko) and cornish crab roll (crabmeat, avocado and smoked herring roe).  We expected to get large rolls that you would find in most restaurants but when the sushi came out, they had managed to fit 18 rolls onto one small plate.  This wasn’t really a problem for us as they were quite filling (partly because the rolls consisted of mostly rice), the main downfall of these rolls were that they had no taste and the rice lacked any flavouring.  The yakitori was a disappointment too as the meat was overcooked, dry and hard with again no flavour.  What saved the evening was the to-die-for desserts.  I had a green tea creme brulee which is something that I had never tried before (see other green tea foods that I have found in London here) and my friend had a nougat ice cream.   Service was very attentive when we first arrived but as the restaurant got busier the waitress was nowhere to be seen and we waited around half an hour to sort out our bill.  All-in-all, the food was below average and not very authentic but I think I will go back to Yakitoria just for the desserts! :-)

Green Tea Mousse Pocky

Posted on July 27th, 2007 in Green Tea London by Stephanie

A favourite green tea snack of mine that can be bought in the Japan Centre supermarket in Piccadilly (212 Piccadilly, London, W1J 9HX) is Green Tea Mousse Pocky.  Green Tea Mousse Pocky is basically a plain biscuit stick covered with a green tea chocolate-like substance (which doesn’t really resemble mousse).  The green tea chocolate has a strong milky green tea flavour but with the bitter aftertaste that I like from green tea foods.  I would definately recommend trying it!

Green Tea Milk Bun

Posted on July 15th, 2007 in Green Tea London by Stephanie

Let me explain to everyone reading this that I have an obsession with everything to do with green tea.  I’ve had green tea sweets, green tea cake, green tea eclairs, green tea truffles, green tea toast, the list is endless!  A lot of the unusual green tea food/drinks I’ve had has been on holidays in Japan and the US but I am trying to sample everything “green tea” that London has to offer.  I bought this green tea milk bun yesterday in a bakery called Wonderful Patisserie in Chinatown (45 Gerrard Street, London W1D 5QQ).  It is basically a plain bun with a green tea paste spread over it rather than a bun made with green tea.  It is quite plain with a mild sweet green tea taste but is nice if you heat it in a microwave for 10 seconds!
